The Executive Director of the Institute of Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), a Tema -based Think Tank, Peter Bismark Kwofie has sounded the sound of alarm on the politicization of the security agencies, especially the military.
He noted that, there are structures for recruiting into the military, but the bastardization of the processes in favour of political partisanship is a threat to the country’s democracy.
Mr Kwofie explained that, it is an open secret that the major political parties when in govt influence the recruitment of its members into the security agencies, and not through meritocracy.
He further noted that, even though the threat of war is clear however, structures put in place would make it difficult for a successful coup in the country.
Explaining that, the positioning of military installations has to a extent, been de-militarized with security officers getting close to civilians’ habitation.
By this relationship with the citizens, threat of coup has so far been reduced, however, the partisan politicization could pose a major threat.
Mr Kwofie was speaking in an interview on Ahotor 92.3fm news.
“Should foot soldiers recruited through political manipulation rise through the ranks to occupy sensitive positions in the military architecture, could pose a threat to the ruling government who might not be from their political persuasion.
This he said, could destabilize any government hence the need to ensure the neutralization of all security agencies.
