Politicians, Media Urged to Handle Bawku Crisis with Caution

The Bawku crisis requires careful handling, according to Mr. David Adoliba, Secretary of the Kusaug Traditional Council and Spokesperson for Bawku Naba. He’s urging politicians and the media to prioritize the welfare and safety of the people involved, rather than exploiting the situation for personal gain. The crisis, which revolves around a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, has resulted in recurring waves of violent clashes, deaths, injuries, and property damage.

Mr. Adoliba cautioned against playing politics with the issue, considering the lives lost and potential consequences. The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has also urged stakeholders to stop politicizing the crisis and allow the government to deal with security and chieftaincy issues.

Mr. Adoliba criticized the media for sensationalizing incidents and urged them to be more accurate and responsible in their reporting. He emphasized the need for sensitivity, given the harsh reality of constant gunshots faced by the people of Bawku.
The government has imposed a curfew in Bawku to restore peace and order. President John Dramani Mahama has also reiterated his commitment to resolving the conflict, emphasizing the need for collective action, unity, and dialogue among all parties involved.

Economic Policy Analyst Senyo Hosi has warned that the conflict, if not properly managed, could spiral into a full-blown civil conflict. This highlights the urgent need for a national, strategic response to contain the unrest.

Mr. Adoliba emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work together to resolve the crisis, prioritizing the welfare and safety of the people involved.The media should approach their reporting with sensitivity and accuracy, avoiding sensationalism and incorrect reporting.

The government should continue to work impartially with all parties involved, supporting peace-building initiatives and ensuring lasting peace prevails in the region.
