The political atmosphere surrounding the unveiling of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate for the New Patriotic Party led him to address political supporters as though he were on a rally platform. However, his comment comparing the performance of the current president to that of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, has drawn criticism for being unfortunate and baseless.
Observers suggest that all statements from speakers, including the unguarded remarks from the running mate, were politically orchestrated, given the presence of the president. It is deemed appropriate for the president to distance himself from such remarks.
Political Marketing Strategist Professor Kobby Mensah made these observations on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra. He emphasized that the party’s stance undermines the achievements of Ghana’s first president, suggesting that the current president’s performance is not exemplary.
Looking ahead, Professor Mensah called for better management and scripting for the NPP candidate’s running mate, cautioning that her public statements are potentially damaging to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s candidacy.
In another development, Professor Mensah expressed skepticism about the electoral prospects of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s ticket for the 2024 elections, citing their contrasting personalities and potential campaign challenges.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh recently faced criticism for his assertion at a rally in Kumasi, where he was introduced as the running mate, that President Nana Akufo-Addo has outperformed all previous presidents, including Kwame Nkrumah. His remarks sparked widespread debate and accusations of intellectual dishonesty.
“In our history as Ghanaians, I can confidently say that no president has surpassed Akufo-Addo’s performance. From 1957 to date, including Kwame Nkrumah and others, none have managed Ghana better than him,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated, defending his position amidst the ensuing controversy
