Political Interference Undermining Peace Efforts in Bawku – Security Consultant Warns

The complex interplay of political interests and affiliations with certain traditional rulers is significantly hindering peace efforts in the conflict-prone Bawku area. Politicians with hidden agendas are allegedly influencing the political architecture in ways that compromise the work of frontline officers striving to restore order.

Security Consultant and Fraud Expert, Richard Kumadoe, raised these concerns during an appearance on Adekyee Mu Nsem, a morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.

According to Kumadoe, the situation on the ground is dire. “It is both unfortunate and bizarre how frontline officers have been exposed to danger by elements whose wicked intentions are costing lives. These officers are in the area to restore peace, yet they are being targeted and killed,” he said.

Kumadoe emphasized the need for a coordinated and non-partisan approach to the crisis. He called on the Asantehene Mediation Team to work collaboratively with the National Peace Council and the Christian Council of Ghana to find a lasting resolution to the long-standing conflict in Bawku.

He warned that continued attacks on security personnel could spiral into a broader crisis, potentially prompting a shift in police tactics against those hiding behind political or personal agendas to fuel instability.

In a related development, the Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for a group of armed assailants who shot and killed two police officers at Poyamirea, a community near Binduri in the Upper East Region.

A statement from the Director of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, confirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday, April 13. The officers, dressed in plain clothes, were reportedly traveling on a private motorbike from Bongo to Binduri when they were ambushed and fatally shot. The attackers fled with the motorbike.

The identities of the deceased officers have not yet been released, as authorities are working to notify the families in accordance with traditional and customary protocols.

“The Police Administration wishes to express its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the Regional Commander, and all officers and men in the region. Our hearts and prayers are with you,” the statement read.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi assured the public that the police are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“We would like to assure the general public that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be arrested and brought to face justice; and we will surely get them,” she stressed.
