The Ghana Police Service says it has foiled a planned robbery attack targeting GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank at Labone in Accra, arresting one suspected member of a robbery syndicate and killing two others during a shootout.
According to the Police, at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, it received intelligence that a gang was preparing to attack the three banks. A police response team was immediately deployed to Labone, where the suspected robbers were spotted in two vehicles parked near the banks.
The Police said one of the vehicles sped off after the suspects noticed the officers. A pursuit followed, resulting in the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another occupant escaped. Occupants of the second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing at the Police, leading to a shootout in which two suspects were shot dead.
The Police said two vehicles were recovered from the scene—a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17—along with a blow pistol.
Suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service commended the response team for successfully foiling the planned robbery and expressed appreciation to members of the public who continue to provide credible information on suspected criminal activities.
