The Savannah Regional Police Command, with support from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, has arrested a suspect believed to be part of a gang involved in the robbery of two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market on June 29, 2026. The incident reportedly resulted in the theft of about GH¢430,000.
According to the Police, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to support investigations after the incident. Preliminary investigations established that four armed men, wielding two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun and an AK-47 rifle, attacked the vendors and fired sporadically before fleeing with the money.
Suspect Arrested at Soronuase
Police said sustained surveillance by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate, with support from the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, led to the arrest of 28-year-old Yacouba Oumar at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted taking part in the robbery and named Yakubu Seidu alias Baba, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya alias Addo, and Abduli Buipe alias Addo as accomplices.
He also allegedly told investigators that the gang was contracted by a cattle trader at the Buipe market identified as Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, to carry out the robbery.
Three Suspects Killed in Police Shootout
The Police said further investigations took officers to Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa, where other suspected members of the syndicate were believed to be hiding.
According to the Police, an exchange of gunfire between officers and the suspects resulted in the deaths of Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu. Their bodies have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Weapons Recovered, Investigations Continue
Following the operation, the Police said they recovered one pump-action gun and five live BB cartridges, as well as a single-barrel gun believed to have been used in the robbery.
Suspect Yacouba Oumar remains in Police custody and is assisting with investigations. The Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest Alhaji Yacouba and other persons connected to the robbery.
