The president of the National Association of Responsible Small Scale Miners, Ghana, Philip Bawah says the call by some religious leaders to place ban on small scale mining as solution to end illegal mining is a misplaced one
Speaking on ‘Asem Yi Di Ka’, a political talk show hosted by Teacher Kojo on Monday, October 17, 2022, he said the call from these religious leaders is uninformed, uneducated and a misplaced one
He expressed his disappointment at this development because he expected these men of God to use their pulpit to educate their members to join in the fight against illegal mining and also tell them to reach out to their relatives involved in the act to put a stop to it
Mr Bawah described as surprising how our religious leaders went to a galamsey site to pray
“leaders can pray to God to give the leaders of the country more wisdom to be able to lead than country other than going to the bush to pray over a galamsey pit”
He urged all religious leaders and various church group to help in the fight to curb the galamsey menace
His comment followed a field trip by the religious leaders last week to some galamsey sites in the Eastern region
The tour was to enable them to assess the level of devastation caused by ‘galamsey’ activities in the communities to inform decision.
They said small- scale mining, both legal and illegal, had destroyed the biodiversity plants, animals’ species and water bodies, which needed urgent restoration.
