Performing in Jamaica is a Big Deal – Jupitar

Ghanaian Dancehall artist Jupitar has expressed disappointment over the unwarranted trolling of Ghanaian artists performing in Jamaica. He believes such criticism is misplaced, as these artists deserve applause for representing Ghana on an international stage.

Jupitar noted that it’s unfortunate some critics downplay the significance of foreign Dancehall artists performing in Jamaica, the birthplace of the genre, which has become a global phenomenon.

Speaking to Graphic Showbiz on Saturday, January 18, Jupitar, born Michael Okine, emphasized that performing in Jamaica is the ultimate dream of every Dancehall artist, including his Ghanaian peers.

The Enemies hitmaker, who performed at Jamaica’s Sting Festival in 2022, described the experience as a major career milestone. “Every Dancehall artiste dreams of performing in Jamaica, especially on iconic platforms like Sting, where many renowned Jamaican Dancehall artists began their journeys.

“For a Ghanaian artiste to secure a spot on such a platform is a big deal. Unfortunately, when we return home, some people dismiss it as insignificant,” he lamented.

Jupitar stressed the importance of supporting Ghanaian artists who work hard to push the country’s music onto the global stage. “These achievements reflect the efforts of Ghanaian artists to promote a positive image of Ghana. We should celebrate and encourage them,” he urged.

The conversation around the significance of Ghanaian Dancehall artists performing in Jamaica gained traction after Shatta Wale performed at Vybz Kartel’s Freedom Concert on December 31, 2024.

While opinions about Shatta Wale’s performance have been divided, especially on social media, Jupitar criticized the media for failing to educate the public on the positive impact of such performances.

“Shatta Wale’s performance in Jamaica is a major achievement for the Ghanaian music industry. It helps put Ghana on the global music map. Many Ghanaian artists perform on international platforms, which boosts our music’s reach and recognition,” Jupitar said.

He highlighted the influence of Shatta Wale’s song On God, which gained traction in Jamaica after the performance. “This is the kind of impact I’m talking about. We can’t allow selfish interests to overshadow such progress. More Ghanaian artists should aim to establish strong connections and perform on these significant platforms,” he added.

Jupitar also praised Dancehall icon Vybz Kartel for his global influence and for giving Shatta Wale the opportunity to perform in Jamaica. “Vybz Kartel is a true king of Dancehall. His recognition of Shatta Wale is a monumental achievement for Shatta’s career and a big win for Ghana,” he concluded.
