Patrice Motsepe re-elected as CAF President, appeals for African unity

South African billionaire, Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected as President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a second term.

The astute football administrator was given the nod once again in the election which took place at the ongoing CAF Extraordinary Congress in Marrakech, where Motsepe contested unopposed.

The 63-year-old’s first term, which began in 2021, is commonly regarded as a progressive era for African football. Leveraging his vast network in both the football and business communities.

Motsepe played a vital role in attaining major sponsorship deals, raising the profile of African competitions, and championing for improved governance within CAF.

Upon his re-election, Motsepe underlined unity across the continent, charging all stakeholders to work together for the advancement of African football.

“The rest who are not contesting today at the election, don’t see yourselves as losers. There’s no losers. We are together. Let’s unite as Africans,” he said in his acceptance speech, reinforcing his vision of collaboration and inclusivity.

 

Motsepe’s reappointment signals continuity in efforts to strengthen African football on the global stage, with an increased focus on infrastructure development, financial transparency, and grassroots investment.

As CAF looks ahead to upcoming tournaments, including the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the expansion of club competitions, Motsepe’s leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping the continent’s footballing future.
