Parliament Passes Tribunals Bill, 2026; Awaits Presidential Assent

Parliament has approved the Tribunals Bill, 2026, clearing it after its third reading in line with the House’s Standing Orders.

The approval represents another milestone in the government’s plan to restore tribunals under a revised legal framework designed to strengthen the country’s justice delivery system. The Bill will now be forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama, whose assent is required before it officially becomes law.

Earlier this year, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, presented the Bill to Parliament. Speaking on the objectives of the proposed legislation, he explained that it was intended to improve access to justice, reduce the backlog of cases in the courts and reintroduce tribunals with constitutional safeguards and stronger oversight mechanisms.

Following its introduction, the proposed legislation was referred to Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee together with the Judiciary Committee for detailed examination and recommendations. After the committee review process, the Bill returned to the House for debate and final consideration.

With Parliament’s approval now secured, the legislation has moved a significant step closer to taking effect. Its implementation, however, remains subject to presidential assent before the new tribunal framework can be operationalized.
