The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to decentralisation as a key strategy to advance good governance and deepen democratic participation across the country.
According to the Speaker, the legislature is determined to ensure that parliamentary processes and engagements become more accessible to citizens at all levels of society.
Speaking at the Speaker’s Breakfast Forum, Mr. Bagbin noted that decentralising parliamentary activities will help strengthen the relationship between the legislature and the people it serves.
He explained that parliamentary decentralisation is not merely a constitutional aspiration, but a practical necessity aimed at building a more inclusive, responsive and accountable governance system in Ghana.
Mr. Bagbin emphasized that bringing parliamentary engagement closer to the people would enable citizens to better understand the work of Parliament, contribute meaningfully to national discussions and hold their representatives accountable.
He further indicated that the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Parliament of Ghana to promote transparency, improve legislative oversight and enhance citizen participation in democratic governance.
The Speaker also stressed that decentralisation would encourage stronger collaboration between Parliament, local authorities and civil society organisations to address developmental challenges at the grassroots level.
He added that strengthening local governance structures and expanding public access to parliamentary activities would ultimately contribute to national development and reinforce democratic values.
Mr. Bagbin therefore called on stakeholders, including policymakers, development partners and civil society groups, to support the initiative aimed at making Ghana’s parliamentary system more people-centred and effective.
