Parliament Approves GHC 4 Billion Budget for Local Government Ministry

Parliament has given the green light for a GHC 4 billion budget allocation to the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs for the 2025 fiscal year. The approval is expected to enhance the ministry’s capacity to drive development and promote inclusivity across local governance structures, traditional authorities, and religious communities.

The allocation will be utilized to pay allowances for assembly members and traditional authorities, fostering motivation and commitment at the grassroots level. Furthermore, the funds will support various flagship projects and initiatives aimed at improving governance, infrastructure, and socio-economic development in local communities.

A notable highlight of the ministry’s 2025 agenda is the establishment of a National Prayer Day, a move aimed at fostering unity and promoting interfaith harmony among Ghanaians.

Speaking to Parliament on Thursday, March 27, the Minister for Roads and Highways, who is also the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Governs Kwame Agbodza, assured members of the government’s commitment to addressing the remuneration concerns of assembly members.

“The assembly members’ remuneration will be integrated into the Common Fund formula, which is currently under review,” he stated. This announcement comes as a relief to assembly members who have long advocated for improved compensation to match their contributions to local governance.

The approved budget underscores the government’s dedication to strengthening local governance, preserving chieftaincy institutions, and promoting religious cohesion. It is anticipated that these efforts will contribute significantly to the nation’s socio-economic growth while reinforcing the role of grassroots leaders in driving development.

This development is expected to spark discussions among stakeholders about the effectiveness of the proposed initiatives and their potential impact on the lives of Ghanaians at the community level.
