Ghana’s Parliament has approved a GH¢1.2 billion budget for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition for the 2025 fiscal year. This allocation is set to drive ambitious programs aimed at enhancing electricity distribution and accelerating the country’s shift towards renewable energy.
A significant portion of the funds will be invested in the installation of one million smart meters across operational areas under the Ministry’s Programme for Results initiative. This project is expected to streamline energy consumption monitoring, reduce wastage, and boost revenue collection for the energy sector.
To ensure improved efficiency in electricity distribution, the Ministry has announced plans to attract private sector participation. This move is expected to optimize operations, enhance service delivery, and address long-standing challenges in the sector.
The budget will also support the commencement of the highly anticipated Accra-Kumasi transmission line project. This initiative, which connects Ghana’s capital to its second-largest city, aims to enhance the reliability and stability of power supply along this critical corridor, which serves as a hub for both residential and industrial consumption
In line with its commitment to sustainable energy, the Ministry will roll out the Government Goes Solar project, aimed at promoting the use of clean and renewable energy sources nationwide. This initiative will not only contribute to reducing Ghana’s carbon footprint but also create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth within the green energy sector.
The approval of the budget underscores the government’s dedication to building a sustainable energy future, improving power infrastructure, and achieving Ghana’s green transition goals.
