Parliament Approves First Batch of Deputy Ministers and Minister of State

 

Ghana’s Parliament has given the green light to the first batch of deputy ministers and a minister of state following their vetting last week. This approval, granted by consensus, marks a key step in bolstering the government’s administrative framework.

The approved nominee for the Minister of State in charge of Public Sector Reforms is Lydia Akanvariba. With her extensive background in governance and reform, Akanvariba is poised to lead efforts to enhance efficiency and productivity across the country’s public sector. Her role is expected to drive significant changes aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring better management of public resources.

In addition to the Minister of State, seven deputy ministers were approved to support various government ministries, providing leadership in critical sectors of the economy. The nominees and their respective portfolios include:

1. Thomas Ampem Nyarko – Deputy Minister for Finance: Nyarko will play a crucial role in managing the nation’s fiscal policies and overseeing public financial management.

2. Ebenezer Terlabi – Deputy Minister for Interior: Terlabi is expected to strengthen national security and internal affairs.

3. Samson Ahi – Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry: Ahi will focus on boosting industrialization and promoting agribusiness to enhance Ghana’s trade capacity.

4. Clement Apaak – Deputy Minister for Education: Apaak will support the education ministry in driving quality education and implementing key reforms in the sector.

5. Richard Gyan Mensah – Deputy Minister for Energy: Mensah is tasked with ensuring reliable energy supply and advancing Ghana’s energy transition initiatives.

6. John Dumelo – Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture: Dumelo will lead efforts to modernize agriculture, support farmers, and enhance food security.

The announcement was made by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor on Friday, March 7, 2025. This development comes at a time when the government is keen to accelerate its agenda of economic growth and development through competent leadership across all sectors.

The approved nominees are expected to begin their respective duties promptly, contributing their expertise and vision to the nation’s development goals.
