Parents Must Step Up: PTA Urges Active Involvement in School Life

The National Council of Parents Teachers Association (PTA) has issued a strong appeal to parents across the country to deepen their involvement in their children’s education. Gapson Kofi Raphael, the General Secretary of the PTA, highlighted that enrolling children in school is only the first step. Beyond registration, parents must actively engage in various aspects of school life to support their children’s academic and personal development.

Mr. Raphael expressed concern that many parents today are too occupied with work and other commitments to participate in PTA meetings or to monitor how their children are progressing in school. This hands-off approach places an unfair burden on teachers who are expected to manage both teaching and parental roles. He reminded parents that their involvement is crucial not only for their children’s success but also for strengthening the overall education system.

Traditionally, parents would frequently visit schools to check on their children’s academic performance and behavior. This practice helped create a shared responsibility between the school and the family. Unfortunately, this level of engagement has diminished over time. Mr. Raphael urged parents to revive this tradition, emphasizing that education is a collective effort that cannot succeed without the combined contributions of parents, educators, and government authorities.

To make a tangible difference, Mr. Raphael advised parents to consistently verify their children’s school attendance. He stressed that merely dropping children off at school is insufficient; parents must ensure their children are attending regularly and meaningfully participating in school activities. Active parental involvement can inspire students to take their education seriously and contribute to improved learning outcomes nationwide.
