The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has referred 12 public institutions, including the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital, to the Attorney General’s Department for prosecution over their failure to recover millions of Ghana cedis in public funds cited in the Auditor-General’s report.
The decision, taken on November 3, follows the institutions’ deliberate refusal to comply with the PAC’s directive to retrieve the funds within 30 days.
The Ranking Member on the PAC, Samuel Atta-Mills, described the move as crucial to enforcing accountability and tightening financial discipline in the public sector.
The institutions’ inaction violates provisions of the Public Financial Management Act, and the PAC is enforcing its authority under Article 187(5) of the 1992 Constitution to hold public officials accountable for mismanaging state funds.
The Attorney General’s office is expected to review the evidence and proceed with formal charges against those found culpable, aiming to strengthen public accountability, recover lost funds, and deter financial misconduct within government institutions.
