Over 600,000 Ghana Cards Remain Unclaimed – NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has disclosed that over 600,000 Ghana Cards, printed as far back as 2018, remain uncollected at its regional and district offices nationwide. This startling revelation underscores a critical challenge in the distribution and collection process of the national identification system.

In a statement dated February 18, 2025, the NIA confirmed the receipt of 700,000 blank cards to clear a backlog of unprinted Ghana Cards, some of which have been pending since 2023. These new cards will facilitate the issuance of overdue records, covering first-time applicants, card replacements, and updates to personal details.

To address the delays, Acting Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku announced the formation of a specialized technical team tasked with accelerating the printing process. He assured that once printed, the cards would be promptly dispatched to district offices for public collection.

The NIA also made a public appeal, urging individuals to visit their respective district offices to collect unclaimed cards that have been idle for years. “This is a national exercise, and every Ghanaian must play their part by ensuring they have their Ghana Card,” the statement emphasized.

In an effort to resolve the long-standing issue of uncollected cards, the NIA is reportedly developing a more efficient distribution system. While details of the new approach remain undisclosed, the authority expressed confidence in its potential to streamline the process and enhance accessibility for all Ghanaians.

The Ghana Card, a crucial component of national identification and integration systems, has faced challenges ranging from production delays to distribution bottlenecks. As the NIA works to eliminate these hurdles, the public’s cooperation will be pivotal in ensuring the success of this national initiative.
