OSP Probes Alleged GH¢1.3 Billion Embezzlement at NPA

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into an alleged embezzlement of GH¢1.3 billion from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), sparking public interest and raising questions about financial accountability within the institution.

At a press briefing on February 12, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, disclosed that the probe centers on suspected corruption and related offences linked to the misappropriation of funds from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF). This critical fund is designed to stabilize petroleum prices across the country, ensuring affordability and consistency for consumers.

“This investigation is part of our unwavering commitment to fight corruption and protect public funds,” Agyebeng declared, emphasizing the gravity of the case.

Individuals Under Scrutiny

The inquiry has so far zeroed in on four key individuals believed to have played significant roles in the alleged mismanagement of the fund. These include:

Jacob Amoah, Coordinator of the UPPF

Wendy Ashong Newman, an NPA staff member

Freda Tandoh, also an NPA staff member

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, a former Chief Executive Officer of the NPA

The Special Prosecutor assured the public that the OSP is committed to conducting a thorough, impartial, and evidence-based investigation to uncover the truth behind the allegations.

Implications of the Case

The UPPF is a cornerstone of Ghana’s petroleum pricing system, ensuring equitable distribution and price stability of fuel across the country. Allegations of corruption at such a high level have the potential to disrupt public trust in critical state institutions and hinder economic stability.

Agyebeng reiterated that the investigation is not only about identifying culprits but also about addressing systemic weaknesses within the NPA to prevent future occurrences. “This is about safeguarding the public purse and reinforcing transparency and accountability in governance,” he stated.

Public Reaction

The announcement has elicited strong reactions from the public and civil society organizations, many of whom are calling for swift action and accountability. Some have described the alleged embezzlement as a betrayal of public trust, demanding the government take stringent measures to deter future misconduct.

The OSP has called on anyone with relevant information to assist in the ongoing investigations, reaffirming its dedication to combating corruption and upholding the rule of law.

As the case unfolds, the nation watches closely, anticipating justice and significant reforms to restore confidence in the management of state funds.
