Organised Labour Strike: The Strike continues until ………. – GNAT

Isaac Nii Baah, Head of Compensation at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has stood firm despite appeals to call off the planned strike, which begins today, Monday, July 15.

The strike is in protest of the sale of a 60% stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

Organised Labour expressed its dissatisfaction with the transaction and announced an indefinite strike if the process wasn’t halted. Under significant pressure from other worker unions, SSNIT terminated the transaction on Friday, July 12.

In an interview with Citizen Kofi Owusu on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor FM, Isaac Nii Baah emphasized the contributions of Ghanaian workers towards the country’s independence.

He asserted that the strike would continue until Organised Labour’s leadership convenes.

“This strike is not just about the sale of SSNIT hotels, but also about the broader issue of mismanagement,” Nii Baah stated.

He criticized SSNIT’s handling of pensioners’ funds and the lack of proper governance in government operations.

He argued that the hotels should not be sold but rather have their management changed. “The procedure SSNIT intended to use to sell the hotels doesn’t make sense,” he added.

Mr. Nii Baah declared that the strike would persist until their leadership meets. “It’s not just about selling the hotels; SSNIT has been engaging in many actions against labor interests,” he said.

He pointed to records showing that the SSNIT hotels are not profitable, attributing this to poor management.
