TEMA, Ghana, 18 April: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called for a reshuffle at the Attorney-General’s Department, raising concerns over the effectiveness of Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
According to Mr. Koomson, while the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) remains a critical institution in the fight against corruption, its leadership may be undermining its impact.
He argued that the issue may not lie with the structure of the office itself, but rather with the “character manning the place.”
He specifically criticised the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, citing what he described as inaction in prosecuting individuals implicated in corruption-related cases.
According to him, the perceived lack of progress is both worrying and detrimental to public confidence in the anti-corruption framework.
Mr. Koomson’s remarks come in the wake of a recent ruling by the Accra High Court, which held that the OSP does not have independent authority to prosecute criminal cases and must instead refer such matters to the Attorney-General’s Department.
The decision has sparked a national debate over the mandate, independence, and overall effectiveness of the OSP in tackling corruption.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, April 18, Mr. Koomson reiterated that while the Office of the Special Prosecutor is a good initiative, the current Special Prosecutor is the problem and should be replaced.
