Akwatia AME Zion School in the Eastern Region is facing a severe sanitation and security crisis that is disrupting teaching and learning, with teachers threatening to withdraw their services or request transfers if urgent action is not taken.
The historic school, one of the oldest in Akwatia, has reportedly been turned into an open defecation site by unknown individuals, creating an unhealthy and unsafe environment for pupils and staff.
Speaking in an interview, the Headmistress, Madam Ruby Odoi, disclosed that teachers are compelled to clean human faeces from the school compound almost every day before lessons can begin.
More disturbing, she revealed that some perpetrators have broken classroom windows to defecate inside classrooms, contaminating learning spaces and exposing students to serious health risks.
Madam Odoi described the situation as intolerable, warning that continued neglect could force teachers to seek transfers, a move that would destabilise the school and undermine academic work.
She therefore appealed to the relevant authorities, traditional leaders and the municipal assembly to intervene urgently by fencing the school and installing CCTV cameras to deter and identify offenders.
“The school cannot continue like this,” she stressed, calling for immediate measures to protect the dignity, safety and learning environment of both students and staff.
