One person remains trapped underground as rescue teams continue efforts to reach the miner following the collapse of a mining pit at Manso Keniago in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while miners were reportedly working in the pit in search of gold. Reports indicate that 10 people were in the mining pit when it collapsed, but two managed to escape. The remaining eight miners were trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue teams worked through the night and have so far retrieved the bodies of seven of the eight miners trapped underground. All seven have been confirmed dead, while efforts continue to locate and rescue the remaining miner.
A resident, K. Badu, who spoke to media on Friday, September 4, said two miners who were not inside the pit at the time of the collapse rushed to the community to seek help.
According to him, residents subsequently mobilised a search and rescue team and alerted the police and other relevant emergency agencies.
Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Manso Keniago, while the remaining two are said to be from other communities.
Personnel from the Amansie South District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and community volunteers are currently at the site, continuing the search for the remaining miner who is believed to be trapped beneath the collapsed pit.
