Omanhene of Mampong Traditional Council Gives NDC Ultimatum Over Anti-Ashanti Remarks

The Omanhene of Mampong Traditional Council, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has given the National Democratic Congress (NDC) an ultimatum to retract anti-Ashanti remarks made by some party members. The comments were sparked by the possible nomination of Esther Dwomoh, an Ashanti, for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position in Asante Mampong, with some NDC youth protesting and vandalizing party property while declaring, “No Ashanti will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong”.

The Omanhene has given the NDC until Monday afternoon, April 14, 2025, to withdraw their statements.
Failure to comply will lead to the Omanhene taking action to demonstrate the power and jurisdiction of the traditional council, with threats to “shake things up”.

Traditional institutions in Ghana, like the Mampong Traditional Council, play significant roles in local justice, land, and community development activities, which can sometimes intersect with politics.
The situation highlights the complex dynamics between traditional leadership and modern political structures in Ghana, with potential repercussions for NDC members if they fail to comply with the Omanhene’s ultimatum.

The development has sparked interest in how traditional institutions navigate political tensions and whether their interventions can lead to resolutions or further conflicts.

The outcome of this situation will likely have significant implications for the NDC, the traditional council, and the community as a whole.
