Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has expressed confidence in the party’s chances of winning power in the upcoming elections. According to him, this optimism stems from the extensive campaign efforts led by himself and Vice President Elect Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang across nine regions of Ghana. He stated that the overwhelming support they witnessed during their tours convinced him that victory for the NDC is imminent. “Some may think I’m boasting, but this is grounded in what I have personally observed,” he emphasized.
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo also took a moment to reflect on the legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, praising him for his instrumental role in introducing the Presidential Transition Act. He explained that prior to the enactment of this law, transitions of power between governments were unregulated, leaving room for arbitrary practices during handover ceremonies. “President Mills believed in strengthening our democracy, which is why he championed the need for a legal framework to guide the transitional process,” he noted.
Highlighting the significance of the Presidential Transition Act, Dr. Ofosu Ampofo pointed out that its provisions have ensured smooth and structured transitions of power. He used the example of former President John Dramani Mahama’s ascension to power, noting that once the Electoral Commission declared him president-elect, the law required that transition processes commence within 48 hours.
Addressing claims that President Nana Akufo-Addo showed exceptional goodwill by inviting John Mahama for a smooth transition in the past, Dr. Ofosu Ampofo clarified that such actions were mandated by law and not simply acts of benevolence. “It is important to recognize the systems we have in place rather than attributing these to personal gestures. The law ensures that transitions are orderly and timely, as envisioned by President Mills,” he explained.
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo concluded by urging all Ghanaians to appreciate the institutional frameworks that continue to strengthen the country’s democratic processes.
During an interview with Nana Dogbey on Adekyee mu nsem on Ahotor fm Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo again raised concerns about incidents of individuals allegedly retrieving items distributed in certain communities. According to him, many of those involved in these activities are members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo explained that in some cases, items intended for distribution during campaigns were left unshared in various locations, prompting party members to return and reclaim them. “There are reports from certain areas that the items brought for distribution were not shared as planned, and now some people are going back to collect them,” he stated.
He contrasted this behaviour with the actions of NDC supporters, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding such resources. “What our NDC supporters do, however, is to step in and protect these items whenever they hear that they are at risk of being taken away. They rush to secure and safeguard them to ensure fairness and accountability,” he added.
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo used the opportunity to call for more transparency and proper management of resources during political campaigns, urging all parties to focus on initiatives that genuinely benefit the people. He also encouraged NDC supporters to remain vigilant and committed to upholding the values of the party.
