Accra, December 18, 2025 — Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has retained elite US lawyers to resist Ghana’s extradition efforts.
Speaking during the government’s Accountability Series on Thursday, just after Ghana submitted its formal extradition request to US authorities, Dr. Ayine said such challenges are standard. “The subject of an extradition will fight it in court. I’ve been informed that Mr. Ofori-Atta has hired some of the top lawyers in the US with extensive experience to defend him,” he stated. He added that this does not deter Ghanaian officials.
Dr. Ayine explained that US extradition cases navigate the federal court system, facing rigorous review. “He can challenge decisions in federal district court, circuit court, and even the US Supreme Court if needed,” he noted.
Though the process may drag on, the Attorney General voiced strong confidence in Ghana’s case, predicting the US judiciary will decide the final outcome.
