Ghanaian highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has opened up about the personal struggles that influenced his decision to temporarily move from highlife music into gospel.
Speaking to Nana Romeo on Atuu on August 22, 2026, the veteran musician revealed that the pressures and challenges that came with fame pushed him to seek a deeper relationship with God.
According to the “Otoolege” hitmaker, the decision to switch to gospel music was not one that everyone understood at the time. However, he believes it played an important role in helping him navigate a difficult period in his life.
Ofori Amponsah explained that musicians often face intense pressure behind the scenes, and without proper guidance, fame can negatively affect their lives.
He disclosed that during that period, getting closer to God became necessary for his survival and personal well-being.
“That time, the things that were happening to me, I had to get closer to God more. If I didn’t take that decision then, I wouldn’t have been alive by now.”
The highlife star also noted that although he is not a regular churchgoer, his relationship with God remains an important part of his life.
