Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu in the Volta Region, has allegedly revealed that despite a 31-month halt in the construction of the National Cathedral, members of the project’s secretariat continue to receive salaries.
He claimed that his interns provided evidence showing that members of the secretariat recently received their payments, despite the project being abandoned since March 2022.
In an interview with the media, Ablakwa, who also serves as the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized the government for continuing to pay these individuals while other essential workers, including mortuary workers, university senior staff, TEWU (Teachers and Educational Workers Union), and UTAG (University Teachers Association of Ghana), are protesting against poor working conditions and unpaid salaries.
He questioned why the government continues to pay the National Cathedral secretariat members who are not actively working, while other critical sectors are being neglected.
