The National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) has charged the Government to show honesty to its campaign promise of paying Teachers and Nursing training allowance as they promise in the run-up to 2016 elections.
This call was done by the president of the Union, H.E Isaac Jay Hyde in their press conference dated 14th July 2020 at the Press Center in Accra.
The Student Union through their president express worries in final year students who are back to school and needs to settle some outstanding debts before allowing to sit for their final exams and yet not being paid their allowances to help them financially, He said “Some final year colleagues in the nursing and teacher training schools rely heavily on the allowance to pay their academic bills, and they have outstanding bills to clear before they are allowed to sit for their final exams by the various Training institutions” and for that matter a lot of their students are really going through bad times on their various campuses.
Speaking to the president of the National Health Students Association of Ghana, he added that the issue is very worrying and disturbing as students hope of getting some financial assistance through the paying of the allowance has been left in a gross disappointment.
He highlighted that for the past seven (7) months they have not received their allowance the government promised.

NUGS will like to commend government for restoring the nursing and teacher trainee allowances as a fulfillment of one of its promises during the 2016 electioneering process. However, it is instructive to note that for some months now, our allowances have been in arrears (second semester).
This has brought untold hardship on our colleague students in the health sector, Teacher Training Sectors, especially the final years who are back to campus preparing to sit for their final exams.
Some of these our final year colleagues in the nursing and teacher training schools, rely heavily on the allowance to pay their academic bills, and they have outstanding bills to clear before they are allowed to sit for their final exams by the various Training institutions.
We have been notified about the commencement of payment of trainee allowances this week, with some colleagues confirming receipt of their allowances.
We are appealing to the loan secretariats and the appropriate agencies to ensure that all trainees are paid within the stipulated timelines.
