NRSA Urges Collaboration with Police to Ensure Road Safety During Easter–Abraham Amaliba

As the Easter season approaches and road networks across the country become increasingly busy, there is a strong call for concerted efforts between the public, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).

Speaking on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM in Accra, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu, the Acting Director of the National Road Safety Authority, Abraham Amaliba, emphasized the urgent need for road safety during this festive period. He urged all drivers to adhere to traffic regulations, observe road signs, and comply with directives from traffic officers to ensure that everyone can “Arrive Alive.”

According to Mr. Amaliba, the MTTD will deploy officers along the Eastern Region corridor to conduct spot checks and impose fines on drivers who violate road safety laws. He stressed the importance of patience on the road to prevent avoidable accidents that could result in the loss of lives.

He also called on the Ghana Highways Authority to play a more active role in providing road signs and other crucial safety information to enhance road use. Additionally, he urged the Department of Urban Roads and municipal assemblies to enforce laws that prevent the use of highway shoulders as parking spaces for heavy-duty and haulage vehicles. This, he said, would significantly reduce the risk of unexpected accidents on major highways.

Mr. Amaliba further advocated for improved emergency response services, including ambulance and vehicle recovery units on major roads, to promptly respond to accidents and provide first aid to victims.

As part of the Easter road safety campaign, he highlighted the importance of on-the-spot education and sensitization for drivers, encouraging them to be cautious, obey traffic signs, and drive responsibly throughout the holidays.
