NPP’s Reasons for 2024 Defeat Baseless – Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) explanations for its defeat in the 2024 general elections are baseless and unfounded, according to Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on Adekyee Mu Nsem, a morning show on Ahotor FM hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, Dr. Tanko-Computer asserted that the NPP’s claims—particularly blaming voter apathy among its supporters—do not reflect the true reasons behind their loss.

“The statement that their supporters did not come out to vote is simply not factual,” he said.

He added that the NPP has never won an election in Ghana without alleged manipulation, stating that the party has historically relied on rigging tactics rather than genuine electoral appeal.

“The NPP has no credible record of winning elections in Ghana through free and fair means. Their rigging machinery failed this time, and that is why they lost,” he alleged.

Dr. Tanko-Computer further criticized the NPP’s post-election reviews, referencing a report led by Prof. Mike Oquaye, saying the party still lacks clarity on the true reasons behind its defeat.

“These people (NPP), up until now, still do not know why they lost the election, and I am happy they are still trying to figure it out,” he stated. “Even after the report presented by Prof. Mike Oquaye, they still don’t understand. They don’t know—and they will not know.”

His comments were in response to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent claim that the NPP’s loss was due to voter apathy, not religious factors. Bawumia, who served as the party’s flagbearer, dismissed suggestions that his Muslim faith influenced the outcome.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tanko-Computer emphasized the NDC’s focus on the future, stating that the party is already preparing for the 2028 elections.

“We are preparing 30% for them in 2028, and thank God, we are moving in the right direction,” he concluded.
