NPP’s Demonstration is Politically Motivated – Mahdi Jibril

The Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing demonstration as a mere political exercise. According to him, some NPP executives are using the protest as an opportunity to position themselves ahead of their upcoming internal elections.

Speaking on Adekyee Mu Nsem, a morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, Jibril accused the NPP of orchestrating a propaganda campaign to score cheap political points.

“I am surprised that the NPP, which is often regarded as a strong advocate of the rule of law, is now ridiculing the legal process initiated by President John Dramani Mahama, as though he has violated the constitution,” he stated.

Jibril emphasized that despite governing the country for the past four months, President Mahama has neither initiated any steps to amend existing laws nor directed the Attorney General to manipulate the legal framework to serve political interests—particularly concerning the recent suspension of the Chief Justice.

NPP Leads Protest Over Suspension of Chief Justice

In a related development, a coalition led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) staged a public demonstration in Accra on Monday, demanding the immediate reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Her suspension by President Mahama has sparked widespread political backlash.

Protesters began assembling early Monday at a car park opposite the Supreme Court, preparing to march through major streets in the capital.

Organisers of the protest said the demonstration aims to defend judicial independence and condemn what they call an unconstitutional and politically motivated decision.

The NPP was joined by several allied political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

According to the coalition, the suspension of the Chief Justice poses a serious threat to the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

In addition to the street march, protest leaders plan to submit formal petitions to both Parliament and the Office of the President, calling for a reversal of the suspension and advocating for stronger protections for judicial independence.
