The New Patriotic Party (NPP) appears to be in disarray regarding its political strategy, particularly in setting an agenda to counter the development policies and social contract of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under President John Dramani Mahama, who secured a resounding victory in the 2024 general elections.
According to Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, Executive Director of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, the NPP’s post-election analysis, particularly that of former flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, reveals a party that lacks a clear understanding of how it lost the election.
Speaking on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, Dr. Tanko-Computer described the NPP’s internal confusion as “bizarre and unfortunate.”
He emphasized that the widespread corruption, economic mismanagement, and alleged acts of thievery under the NPP administration deserve more national attention. He urged President Mahama to remain focused and committed to fulfilling the NDC’s development agenda and the social contract with Ghanaians.
Dr. Tanko-Computer also criticized the credibility of the NPP, pointing out that Dr. Bawumia’s reported intention to serialize the contents of the Prof. Mike Oquaye report—despite earlier promises that it would not be made public—further damages the party’s integrity.
In a related development, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has slammed Dr. Bawumia for failing to take personal responsibility for the NPP’s electoral defeat. Dr. Bawumia recently cited several factors behind the party’s loss, including the controversial Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), the unpopular E-Levy, internal divisions, and what he described as the “arrogance of power.”
In a Facebook post on Sunday, April 27, Dr. Boamah responded sharply, stating:
“Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything & everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical of the NPP’s economic mess!”
His criticism adds to growing scrutiny over Dr. Bawumia’s role in the NPP government’s economic performance, particularly during his tenure as head of the Economic Management Team. Many analysts and political observers, including Dr. Boamah, argue that the NPP’s handling of the economy was a significant factor in the party’s 2024 defeat.
