NPP Pledges Firm, Responsible Opposition Role Amid Economic Woes

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) vows to stay a vigilant opposition, holding the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government accountable for broken promises and deepening economic hardships, Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed declared.
Speaking on Joy Prime on January 14, Mohammed emphasized the NPP’s role in scrutinizing unfulfilled commitments that have failed to ease Ghanaians’ struggles.
“We have remained a very responsible opposition party,” he said. “We are checking the government on the promises they made to Ghanaians and the failures we see today.”
Mohammed highlighted how economic woes stifled celebrations. “People are crying. Even during Christmas and New Year, families couldn’t celebrate like before because of the hardship.”
He shared a recent encounter at a College of Education, where students reported surviving on one meal a day instead of three. “The situation is very worrying,” he said, warning of declining living standards for teachers and workers nationwide. “We are deteriorating. The standard of living of our teachers is going down—that tells you something is seriously wrong.”
Mohammed stressed the NPP’s commitment to accountability. “As long as we are in Ghana, we will remain a responsible opposition to keep the government in check.”
On party matters, he affirmed strict enforcement of rules. “No member is above the party’s constitution. When someone misbehaves, the party calls them to order.”
At a recent National Council meeting, the NPP granted amnesty to members facing disciplinary action or suspensions, promoting unity after National Executive Committee deliberations. However, he cautioned: this isn’t a license for indiscipline. The national leadership now has authority to act decisively on future violations.
