NPP MP Michael Okyere Baafi Defends Chaotic Vetting Scenes, Calls It Necessary for Transparency

The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has justified the chaotic incidents that marred the vetting of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees last month.

According to him, the disruptions—which ultimately led to the suspension of four Members of Parliament—were a necessary measure taken by the Minority to ensure a transparent and fair vetting process.

Speaking during a community engagement with his constituents, Okyere Baafi argued that without the strong resistance from the Minority, the vetting process might not have been conducted with the necessary level of scrutiny.

He insisted that the uproar was the only available option to demand accountability and fairness in the approval of the nominees.

“The Minority had to take a stand to ensure transparency. If we had simply allowed things to proceed without resistance, critical issues regarding the nominees may have been overlooked,” he stated.

His comments come in the wake of ongoing debates over the conduct of MPs during the vetting process, with some political analysts and civil society organizations condemning the disruptions.

However, Okyere Baafi maintained that in the face of what he described as an unfair process, the Minority had no choice but to act.

The vetting, which was expected to be a routine exercise, turned chaotic as disagreements escalated into heated exchanges, forcing the parliamentary leadership to suspend four MPs.

Despite criticisms, Okyere Baafi remains resolute in his defense, insisting that the chaotic scenes were not an attempt to undermine the process but rather to safeguard the principles of democracy and good governance.
