“NPP Is Suffering From Withdrawal Syndrome” – Abraham Koomson

TEMA, Ghana, 23rd May: Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL),Abraham Koomson, has cautioned the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain alert and prepared in dealing with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisting that the party “does not want peace.”

According to him, the conduct of the NPP since leaving office suggests a party behaving as though it had been out of power for a decade rather than just over a year.

Speaking on Ahotor’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, May 23, Mr. Koomson stated that the NPP is suffering from what he described as a “withdrawal syndrome” following its exit from government.

He said it was surprising for the NPP to complain about threats to free speech barely a year after leaving office.

The NPP recently accused the government of suppressing free speech following the arrest of some of its members over controversial comments.

However, Mr. Koomson argued that freedom of expression should not be used as a cover for insulting the President.

“You cannot simply wake up, insult the President, and expect to walk away freely in any serious country,” he stressed.

Mr. Koomson further urged the NDC to strengthen and empower its grassroots supporters to effectively counter what he described as propaganda from the NPP, adding that not every political issue should be left solely for the police to handle.

Meanwhile, the National Peace Council (NPC) earlier this week expressed concern over rising political tensions in the country following the arrest of some political figures over comments alleged to have breached Ghana’s laws.

In a statement issued on May 20, 2026, the Council called for calm, restraint, and responsible public discourse, emphasizing the need to safeguard Ghana’s democratic stability and national peace.

Reacting to the Council’s concerns, Mr. Koomson maintained that there was no real political tension in the country, insisting that only some members of the NPP were attempting to hide behind free speech in order to insult the President.
