NPP Infighting Heats Up Over Bawumia’s Election Loss Remarks

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is embroiled in a heated debate following Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent “Thank You Tour” comments on the party’s loss in the 2024 elections. Dr. Bawumia attributed the defeat to unpopular policies, including the e-levy and Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP), sparking controversy within the party.

Dr. Palgrave Boakye Danquah, former Government Spokesperson under the Akufo-Addo administration, has condemned Dr. Bawumia’s speech, accusing him of attempting to dissociate himself from the party’s defeat. According to Dr. Danquah, Dr. Bawumia’s comments are an attempt to shift blame away from himself and onto other party members.

However, Nana Akomeah, former Deputy Chairman of Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team, has defended the former Vice President’s comments. According to Akomeah, Dr. Bawumia’s remarks were based on the report from the Oquaye Committee, set up by the party to investigate the election loss. Akomeah insists that Dr. Bawumia was not attempting to shift blame but rather highlighting key issues that contributed to the party’s defeat.

Akomeah also pointed out that Dr. Bawumia is not the only one who has spoken about the e-levy and DDEP. Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and the NPP General Secretary have also discussed these issues, making it unfair to single out Dr. Bawumia for criticism. Akomeah’s defense of Dr. Bawumia has added fuel to the debate, highlighting the complexities of party dynamics and the challenges of navigating internal criticism.

The controversy surrounding Dr. Bawumia’s comments has exposed deep-seated divisions within the NPP. As the party seeks to regroup and rebuild after its election loss, internal conflicts and finger-pointing are likely to continue. The debate over Dr. Bawumia’s comments is a reflection of the party’s struggle to come to terms with its defeat and chart a new course forward.

The Oquaye Committee’s report is likely to play a significant role in shaping the party’s future direction. As the NPP grapples with the findings and recommendations of the report, party members will need to navigate their differences and work towards a common goal. The controversy surrounding Dr. Bawumia’s comments serves as a reminder of the challenges facing the party as it seeks to rebuild and regain the trust of Ghanaians.

Ultimately, the NPP’s ability to manage its internal conflicts and present a united front will be crucial in determining its future success. As the party navigates this challenging period, it will be essential for party members to engage in constructive debate and work towards a shared vision for the party’s future.
