NPP Has Lost Ghanaians’ Trust, GoldBod Claims Expose Party’s Credibility Crisis — Joseph Awuku

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) continues to face criticism following its defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, with allegations of corruption and mismanagement under its previous administration still dominating political discourse.

Against this backdrop, the Communication Officer for Ashaiman, Joseph Awuku, has criticised the NPP and the Minority in Parliament for raising concerns about the operations and transactions of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Speaking during a panel discussion on Ahotor 92.3 FM in Accra, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu, Mr Awuku questioned the basis of the Minority’s allegations against GoldBod. He also criticised the record of the Minority Leader and former Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Board Chairman, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in relation to the management of the power utility.

According to Mr Awuku, Mr Afenyo-Markin has no moral authority to question the operations of GoldBod while questions remain about the management of ECG during his tenure as board chairman.

He argued that the NPP had disappointed Ghanaians during its eight years in government and had lost the political goodwill necessary to regain power.

Mr Awuku further stated that Ghanaians were not prepared to return the NPP to government, arguing that the party’s record in office had left much to be desired.

He added that the NPP currently lacked a compelling political message capable of convincing voters ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Mr Awuku also expressed confidence in the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying that whoever the party selects as its presidential candidate for the 2028 election would defeat the NPP flagbearer.

He said Ghanaians were prepared to allow the NDC government to continue with what he described as its good work.

GoldBod Rejects GH¢5.4 Billion Loss Claim

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has rejected claims that the state-owned gold-buying institution incurred losses of $1.7 billion in 2025, describing the allegation as a “barefaced lie.”

According to Mr Gyamfi, the reported figure does not reflect GoldBod’s actual financial performance for the 2025 financial year.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Mr Gyamfi accused the opposition, particularly Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, of repeatedly making the claim in Parliament and through the media.

He said GoldBod had on several occasions disputed the allegation, insisting that the institution’s audited financial statements present a significantly different picture of its performance.

Mr Gyamfi maintained that GoldBod’s audited accounts should be used as the basis for assessing its financial performance rather than what he described as politically motivated claims.

“Afenyo-Markin and his followers alleged on several occasions on the floor of Parliament and the media that the Ghana Gold Board made losses in the year 2025 repeatedly. This claim is a barefaced lie which has been debunked times without number by the GoldBod.”

He further stated that the audited annual reports and financial statements of GoldBod for the year ended December 31, 2025, prepared and published by the Auditor-General of Ghana, showed an operational surplus of GH¢907 million and an overall profit surplus of GH¢5.4 billion.

“The audited annual reports and financial statements of the GoldBod for the year ended December 31, 2025, prepared and published by the Auditor General of Ghana, disclose an operational surplus of GHS907 million and an overall surplus of profits of GHS5.4 billion. This is an incontrovertible fact,” he said.
