Yendi, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized the importance of reliable electricity in driving industrial expansion and fostering rural enterprise development.
“Reliable electricity is critical to industrial expansion and rural enterprise development,” he stated.
Speaking at a durbar of Chiefs and residents in the Northern Region during his Thank You Tour, President Mahama highlighted the urgent need for improved power infrastructure in Tamale and its surrounding areas.
He announced plans for a new substation and power distribution lines to enhance electricity supply in the region.
“As you heard recently, we have secured a 13.4 million dollar grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency to support the construction of a new substation and power distribution lines in Tamale and surrounding areas aimed at improving electricity supply,” he said.
Additionally, President Mahama disclosed plans for a new bulk supply point on the Eastern Corridor to address persistent low voltage issues affecting nearby towns.
“Ladies and gentlemen, a new bulk supply point will also be built on the eastern corridor to solve the perennial low voltage that is suffered by communities like Gushiegu, Yendi, Bimbila, all the way down to the Oti Region,” he told the gathering.
On infrastructure development, the President reaffirmed his commitment to completing the Eastern Corridor road project, which is expected to facilitate trade and economic activities in the region.
“We aim to complete the eastern corridor road and so, Reverend, like you said, the remaining portions between Otidamanko and Kpasa, and then Kpasa to Nkwanta, are going to be completed so that the eastern corridor will be able to run through,” he said.
President Mahama expressed confidence that these investments would position the Northern Region as a crucial player in Ghana’s economic growth.
“Through these targeted investments, the Northern Region is poised to become a key driver of Ghana’s industrial and agricultural development,” he stated.
He further stressed his vision for sustainable economic transformation in the north, anchored on infrastructure, irrigation, agro-processing, and human capital development.
“By prioritizing infrastructure, irrigation, and agro-processing and human capital development, I intend to lay the foundation for sustainable economic transformation of the north,” he said.
