North East Region: Interior Minister Adjusts Curfew Hours for Walewale Amid Rising Insecurity

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has revised the curfew hours for Walewale and its surrounding communities in the North East Region. Effective Thursday, February 27, 2025, the new curfew hours will run from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, replacing the previous schedule of 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.

This adjustment follows recommendations from the North East Regional Security Council (NERSEC), as outlined in a statement issued by the Interior Ministry on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

The government has urged Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, and the youth in the area to prioritize peace and work collaboratively to address the pressing security concerns through non-violent means.

“Meanwhile, there is a total ban on all persons in the aforementioned communities and their environs from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapon. Anyone found in possession of such items will face immediate arrest and prosecution,” the statement emphasized.

Rising Insecurity in Walewale

The curfew was imposed as a direct response to a series of violent incidents that have gripped the Walewale-Wulugu section of the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway. Between February 11 and February 15, gun attacks claimed the lives of 13 travelers, including an infant, and left several others injured. During the same period, three buses were burned to ashes, heightening fear and insecurity in the region.

These violent acts have disrupted transportation and commerce along the critical highway, prompting swift action from the Ministry of Interior to restore calm. Security forces have since increased patrols in the area, while investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The government continues to appeal for cooperation from residents and stakeholders to ensure peace is maintained. Authorities have warned that anyone found flouting the curfew or engaging in unlawful activities will face severe consequences.

This development underscores the government’s commitment to addressing insecurity and ensuring the safety of citizens in the North East Region.
