NLC Urges TEWU-TUC to End Strike and Resume Negotiations Over Conditions of Service.

The indefinite strike by the Teachers and Education Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) has entered its second day, with the National Labour Commission (NLC) urging the union to end the industrial action and return to negotiations.

The strike, which has disrupted non-teaching activities in schools nationwide, stems from delays in revising the workers’ conditions of service, a longstanding grievance.

Speaking to Ahotor News, Salamatu Mahama Braima, the Chairperson of TEWU-TUC, highlighted the challenges faced by union members. She detailed how the delays in improving their conditions of service have caused immense frustration and hardship, leaving workers feeling undervalued and neglected despite their essential contributions to the education sector.

“Our members have endured these challenges for far too long. We have been patient, but the lack of commitment to resolving these issues leaves us with no choice but to embark on this strike,” Braima explained.

She emphasized that the union remains open to dialogue but insists that tangible actions, not just promises, are needed to address their concerns.

Meanwhile, Ofosu Asamoah, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, expressed optimism that the issues could be resolved through negotiations.

He called on TEWU-TUC to reconsider their stance, end the strike, and engage with stakeholders to find a lasting solution.

“We understand their frustrations, but striking only prolongs the challenges.

Returning to the negotiation table is the most constructive way to address their grievances.

We are confident that with dialogue and cooperation, these matters can be resolved amicably,” Asamoah said.

The strike has raised concerns among parents, students, and school administrators, as it impacts crucial operations such as administrative support, maintenance, and supervision.

Stakeholders are urging both parties to prioritize the welfare of students and work towards a speedy resolution of the impasse.
