Nigeria among seven nations to bid for 2030 & 2034 Commonwealth Games

Fears that Glasgow 2026 might mark the end of the Commonwealth Games have been dispelled, as seven nations have formally expressed interest in hosting the event in 2030 or 2034, signaling a revitalized future for the century-old competition.

Last year, Scotland’s largest city emerged as a savior for the Games, stepping in to host a scaled-back version in 2026 after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to financial constraints. Glasgow’s proposal—a leaner event with fewer sports, fewer athletes, and fewer venues—has significantly reduced costs, making the Games more accessible and appealing to potential hosts. This innovative approach has ignited fresh enthusiasm among Commonwealth nations, prompting a wave of bids for future editions.

In January 2025, the Commonwealth Games Federation invited its 74 member nations to submit expressions of interest for hosting in 2030 or 2034. Seven nations from four of the six Commonwealth regions—Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania—responded positively.

Canada, India, and Nigeria, along with two other countries, have publicly confirmed their bids for the centenary Games in 2030, while New Zealand is among two nations eyeing the 2034 edition.

Over the next five months, the feasibility of these bids will be rigorously evaluated, with the 2030 host expected to be finalized by November 2025.

Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir expressed her excitement, stating, “We are thrilled with the incredible interest from four of our six regions.” She also praised Scotland’s pivotal role, adding, “We cannot understate the hugely-significant role Scotland has played, having the foresight, tenacity and innovative thinking to step forward and host in 2026.”

Glasgow’s bold move has not only secured the immediate future of the Commonwealth Games but also inspired a diverse array of nations to reimagine the event’s potential. As the bidding process unfolds, the Games appear poised to evolve, balancing tradition with sustainability for decades to come.
