NIA Launches Free Ghana Card Issuance in Greater Accra, Warns Against Unauthorized Charges

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has officially commenced the free issuance of Ghana Cards across all district offices in the Greater Accra Region, starting Monday, April 7, 2025. The Authority is calling on the public to remain vigilant and report any staff who demand unauthorized payments for services meant to be free.

This regional exercise is aimed at clearing the backlog of uncollected printed cards and facilitating new registrations. It targets Ghanaians who applied for card issuance, replacements, or updates to their personal records from June 2023 onwards but have yet to receive their cards. These individuals can now visit the district office where they registered to collect their cards without any charge.

In addition, citizens aged 15 years and above who have not yet enrolled for the Ghana Card are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to register for free at any NIA District Office within Greater Accra.

The NIA reiterated that while first-time registrations and the distribution of printed backlog cards are entirely free, services such as card replacement and updates to personal records will still attract the standard processing fees.

The Authority has issued a strong warning to its staff, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for extortion or unauthorized fee collection. Members of the public are urged to promptly report any misconduct to ensure accountability and protect the integrity of the national identification process.

Reaffirming its commitment, the NIA stated that the Ghana Card remains a critical tool for identification, national development, and access to essential public and private services.
