NHIA Introduces Weekly Payments to Healthcare Providers for Enhanced Service Delivery

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced plans to commence weekly payments to accredited healthcare providers nationwide. This decision follows the government’s removal of the spending cap on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), as revealed by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the 2025 budget presentation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, and signed by NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, the authority described the move as a significant step toward fulfilling President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign pledge to strengthen the reliability of Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“The reimbursement of vetted claims will now be processed swiftly and consistently on a weekly basis, starting immediately,” Dr. Bampoe emphasized.

Enforcing Compliance and Accountability

While announcing this initiative, the NHIA reminded healthcare providers to adhere strictly to the scheme’s guidelines, including the prohibition of co-payment practices. Providers have been instructed to ensure that all claims submitted accurately reflect patient attendance and meet the NHIA’s reporting standards.

“Any healthcare provider found violating NHIA policies, including charging unauthorized fees, will face stringent sanctions. There will be no exceptions,” Dr. Bampoe warned.

To further boost accountability, the NHIA has committed to publishing details of claims paid to healthcare providers on its website. Additionally, monitoring efforts at healthcare facilities across the country will be intensified to ensure compliance and transparency.

Positive Impacts on Healthcare Delivery

The introduction of weekly payments is expected to ease financial pressures on healthcare providers, enabling them to maintain uninterrupted service delivery. By streamlining reimbursements, the NHIA aims to enhance the overall efficiency of the health insurance system, improve patient satisfaction, and rebuild public trust in the scheme.

This policy marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s healthcare reforms, reinforcing the government’s dedication to making quality healthcare accessible and affordable for all citizens.
