National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Tema West constituency, Lawyer James Enu, recently highlighted the pressing challenges facing youth in the area, noting that many are unemployed, disheartened, and increasingly frustrated.
Since launching his door-to-door campaign, Lawyer Enu has witnessed firsthand the struggles of young people, many of whom spend their time idling or playing games like draughts while others, desperate for jobs, feel they have little hope under the current administration.
This situation, he said, deeply troubles him as the youth represent the future of Ghana.
During an interview at a community durbar at Sakumono Junction, Lawyer Enu warned that failing to address the youth’s needs could drive some to crime, as they may turn to theft, armed robbery, and other desperate measures.
“Incidents of street attacks and thefts in Tema West are rising,” he observed, “with people being robbed of bags and phones frequently.”
Lawyer Enu believes this alarming trend is linked to the high levels of unemployment and has pledged to tackle it head-on if elected.
Lawyer Enu outlined several initiatives he has already launched to address these challenges and his future plans:Youth Employment CentreLawyer Enu has established a Youth Employment Centre in Tema Community 3, currently developing a database of job-seekers.
To date, over 1,200 people have registered.
The centre aims to connect both skilled and unskilled job-seekers with employment opportunities.
Whether a person holds a degree or seeks vocational training, the centre is there to collect their information and connect them to job placements or apprenticeships.
Additionally, the centre supports aspiring footballers and musicians, helping them find avenues for growth in their careers.
The contact number for the centre is 0249610589, allowing interested individuals to access the services directly.
Focus on EducationAddressing the educational challenges in Tema West,Lawyer Enu acknowledged the infrastructure issues facing many schools in the area.
He intends to launch a “School Enhancement Project” to renovate and revitalize dilapidated and abandoned school buildings.
His commitment to education extends beyond infrastructure.
For the past eight months, he has been providing free remedial classes to help students improve academically, along with supplying much-needed teaching and learning materials.
To instill a sense of patriotism and discipline, Lawyer Enu plans to introduce a cadet corps program in Tema West schools, including navy, military, and fire cadet training, aimed at fostering a love for the nation among young students.
Sports and Talent DevelopmentTema West, once a hub of football talent and home to many Black Stars players, has seen its sports legacy wane in recent years.
To restore this,Lawyer Enu plans to organize an annual MP’s Sports Competition for all public and private schools, hoping to revive the district’s sports culture and identify young talents.
Currently,Lawyer Enu has partnered with True Life Football Club and Harbor City Football Club to support young athletes through jersey donations, competition sponsorships, and mentorship opportunities, providing a pathway for emerging footballers to showcase their talents locally and abroad.
Through these initiatives, Lawyer James Enu aims to transform Tema West by addressing critical challenges in youth employment, education, and sports.
With a focus on tangible, lasting solutions, he hopes to build a future where the youth have the support they need to thrive.
