NDC’s Godwin Ako Gunn: NPP’s Chicken Disease Claims Reflect History and Desire to Undermine Progress

Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has publicly responded to comments made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the alleged introduction of poultry diseases into Ghana. Speaking on Ahotor FM with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Ako Gunn emphasized that if one understands the NPP’s history and tactics, such accusations about spreading chicken diseases are not surprising.

He referenced Ghana’s past political struggles, recalling how, during Kwame Nkrumah’s era, the NPP reportedly used bombs in attempts to eliminate opposition leaders to gain power. Ako Gunn implied that bringing diseases into the country is consistent with the NPP’s ruthless mindset to gain political advantage.

Ako Gunn highlighted the current political situation, noting that the NPP is “last” in the public’s favour and tends to drag others down to its level rather than offering constructive solutions. He asserted that the NPP consistently wishes suffering on Ghanaians and lacks meaningful plans to improve the lives of citizens. Ako Gunn expressed concern that the NPP’s distractions could undermine the NDC’s ongoing “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” project, which aims to boost local poultry production and reduce reliance on imported chickens.

The NDC’s “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” project is designed to help residents access chickens more easily and support local production of day-old chicks, fostering agricultural growth and economic independence. Ako Gunn urged everyone to stay focused on ensuring the success of this initiative. He underlined the importance of the project in reducing chicken imports and decreasing the use of foreign currency like the US dollar for poultry imports, which would benefit the Ghanaian economy.

This exchange comes amid tensions between political parties, with the NDC defending their agriculture strategies against allegations linked to biological threats to the poultry sector. The NDC maintains that progress and national development depend on staying united and advancing projects that improve livelihoods rather than engaging in politically motivated distractions.

Overall, Ako Gunn’s remarks reflect the ongoing political contestation in Ghana, where accusations and defense over initiatives like the “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” project show the high stakes of agricultural policy and national development in the country.
