The functional executive committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has intervened to prevent any potential disruption within the party due to internal disagreements surrounding the vetting process for Metropolitan and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra Region.
The vetting process has sparked significant concerns and internal disputes, leading to divisions within the party at the grassroots level. A news report has confirmed that the results of the Greater Accra MMDCE vetting have been nullified, with Vice Chairman Venyo now set to oversee a new vetting process.
In an interview on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu, Greater Accra General Secretary of the NDC, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie , addressed the controversy. He acknowledged the disagreements and reservations from party members in the region, stressing the need for careful reflection on the issues raised and a concerted effort to resolve all concerns.
Theophilus Tetteh Chaie also took the opportunity to apologize to all candidates who participated in the vetting process, expressing regret over the time and energy lost during the flawed exercise.
Back in January, a coalition of NDC Branch Executives revealed startling evidence of unauthorized shortlists, allegedly compiled by party insiders. These documents allegedly outline the preferred candidates for the MMDCE positions in Greater Accra, and have raised suspicions about the integrity of the vetting process.
The leaked documents, obtained by our sources, show that certain individuals were handpicked by influential figures within the party, bypassing the official vetting process. Sources within the coalition claim these shortlists were created without the knowledge or involvement of the regional minister, party executives, or the constituents who the MMDCEs are meant to represent.
The coalition argues that this manipulation is a clear attempt to undermine the democratic process and impose unelected individuals on the region’s people. The leaked documents also highlight concerns about some of the preferred candidates, who allegedly have questionable backgrounds, including allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and incompetence. In some instances, the candidates appear to lack the qualifications or experience needed for the positions they are being considered for.
“The people of the Greater Accra Region deserve better than having leaders imposed on them by a select few,” said Animle Oyanka Oshimpa, leader of the coalition. “We demand that the party leadership takes immediate action to ensure the selection process is transparent, fair, and democratic.”
The coalition has threatened to release more evidence, including audio and video recordings, if their concerns are not addressed. They are also calling for an immediate suspension of the ongoing selection process and the formation of an independent committee to investigate the allegations.
Political analysts warn that this controversy could damage the party’s reputation and hurt its chances in future elections. “If the public perceives that the party is imposing unelected individuals, it could lead to a significant loss of trust and confidence in its ability to govern effectively,” said Dr. Kwame Asante, a local governance expert.
Under mounting pressure, the ruling party has promised to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. However, the coalition is demanding more concrete steps to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the selection process.
