Alhaji Mohammed Sani Senior, former Ashanti Regional First Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has come to the defense of Sammy Gyamfi, urging forgiveness for his actions in the controversy surrounding the gifting of dollars to Nana Agradaa. According to Alhaji Sani Senior, since Sammy Gyamfi has acknowledged his fault and apologized, he shouldn’t face punishment. He emphasizes that Sammy Gyamfi is human and prone to mistakes, just like anyone else.
Alhaji Sani Senior also believes that Sammy Gyamfi’s actions, while controversial, don’t necessarily warrant severe consequences. He argues that the Code of Conduct doesn’t prohibit ministers from doing good to others, and Sammy Gyamfi should be free to choose who he helps. Additionally, Agradaa’s past affiliations shouldn’t make her an enemy to anyone, in his opinion.
The controversy began when a video surfaced showing Sammy Gyamfi handing over dollars to Agradaa, sparking widespread criticism. Many have called for Samd Gyamfi’s dismissal, citing breaches of the Code of Conduct for public officials. Critics argue that his actions undermine the government’s credibility and commitment to ethical governance.
Notably, Sammy Gyamfi has recently been appointed as the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and tasked with establishing the Ghana Gold Board. This role is part of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto promises aimed at economic revitalization.
Some prominent figures calling for Sammy Gyamfi’s dismissal include:
– Frank Bannor: Development Economist and Senior Research Fellow, who argues that Gyamfi’s actions directly contravene President Mahama’s Code of Conduct.
– Mary Addah: Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, who believes President Mahama should demonstrate his commitment to ethical governance by taking decisive action.
– Theo Acheampong: Economist and risk analyst, who references the President’s pledge to deal swiftly with appointees who breach the Code of Conduct.
– Effah Dartey: Private legal practitioner and politician, who thinks Gyamfi’s actions are a test of President Mahama’s resolve to enforce the Code of Conduct.
– Elvis Darko: Editor of Newscenta Newspaper, who warns that failure to dismiss Gyamfi could undermine the credibility of the administration.
