National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to transform the Ministry of Food and Agriculture into a Ministry of Agriculture and Agribusiness if elected, a move he says will revitalize Ghana’s agricultural sector by integrating agribusiness and creating crop processing zones with factories in farming communities.
Speaking at the Mahama Fellowships with the Clergy in Kumasi, Mr. Mahama emphasized that his proposed approach would address the longstanding challenges farmers face in post-harvest processes.
John Mahama’s plan aims to make farming not only sustainable but also more appealing to the youth.
“Farming is not just about planting and harvesting,” Mahama said. “After their hard work, farmers are often left with limited options, forced to sell their produce at low prices. By establishing crop processing factories in farming areas, we can ensure better distribution and fairer pricing for farmers.”
During the forum, John Mahama reaffirmed that the NDC has a well-developed strategy for agriculture, including policies designed to support farmers and enhance their livelihoods.
He expressed confidence that the creation of these crop processing zones will improve agricultural productivity, boost local economies, and create jobs, positioning Ghana’s agriculture sector as a driver of economic growth.
