The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has moved into the next phase of its 2026 internal reorganisation following the completion of the branch-level process, including outstanding branch elections expected to be concluded by August 11.
The party has subsequently released the official timetable for its constituency, regional and national executive elections, as approved by the Functional Executive Committee on August 4.
Constituency nominations are scheduled for September 15–17, with elections slated for October 24. At the national level, nominations will take place from October 20–21, followed by filing from November 7–9 and vetting from November 12–13.
The National Congress, at which new national executives will be elected, is scheduled for Saturday, December 19, 2026.
As of August 26, the NDC is therefore transitioning from its grassroots and branch-level reorganisation into the constituency and regional executive-election phase, with the major national contest expected to culminate in December. The party says the reorganisation is aimed at strengthening its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Against this backdrop, the NDC Chairman for the Tema West Constituency, Hon. Mohammed Issah, has intensified his engagement with party members as he seeks to consolidate the gains made by the party in the constituency.
As part of his outreach programme, Hon. Mohammed Issah held an engagement with all Branch Women Executives at the Lashibi Ward. The meeting formed part of his efforts to reconnect with delegates, listen to their concerns and highlight the work undertaken by his leadership to strengthen the party and secure the Tema West parliamentary seat for the NDC.
Hon. Issah is seeking re-election and has expressed his commitment to working with his team to retain the constituency for the NDC while building a stronger and more united grassroots organisation.
A Major Political Shift in Tema West
Tema West is one of the constituencies in the Tema area of the Greater Accra Region, covering communities including Adjei Kojo, Baatsona, Lashibi, Klagon and Sakumono, among others. The constituency has traditionally been regarded as an NPP stronghold.
However, the 2024 general election marked a significant political shift. The NDC’s James Enu won the parliamentary seat with 49,225 votes, representing 64.06% of the total votes, defeating the NPP’s Denis Amfo Sefah, who polled 27,618 votes.
The victory provided the NDC with a strong platform going into the next electoral cycle. The challenge now is to consolidate the 2024 breakthrough, strengthen grassroots structures, maintain unity among party members and translate the electoral victory into sustained support across the various electoral areas.
For the NDC, Tema West has consequently evolved from a perceived NPP stronghold into a highly competitive constituency where the party has built considerable momentum through grassroots mobilisation and sustained organisational work.
Focus on Grassroots Empowerment
The engagement with the Branch Women Executives forms part of Hon. Mohammed Issah’s leadership’s continued commitment to empowering party members and strengthening communication between the constituency leadership and the grassroots.
The meeting provided an opportunity to identify, analyse and address concerns raised by members, with emphasis on fairness, inclusiveness and ensuring that party members feel adequately represented and supported.
The extraordinary meeting was highly interactive and successful, with several concerns raised by the Branch Women Executives receiving attention. Plans were also outlined to address the issues identified during the engagement.
Hon. Mohammed Issah assured party members that the grassroots engagement would not end with the Lashibi Ward. He promised that similar engagements would be extended to other wards in the coming days as part of proactive measures to listen to members, respond to their aspirations and further strengthen the party’s structures across Tema West.
With the 2026 internal elections approaching, the continued engagement of delegates and grassroots executives is expected to play an important role in consolidating the NDC’s organisational strength and preserving the momentum generated by its 2024 parliamentary victory in Tema West.
