A new National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has pledged to transform Ghana’s creative industry, beginning with a new National Theatre in Kumasi to support content creators in the region.
The plan also includes modernizing the Accra National Theatre with state-of-the-art equipment to serve as a creative hub for artists nationwide.
During a discussion between NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama and leaders from the creative sector, Baba Sadiq, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Okaikwei Central, highlighted the industry’s economic potential.
He emphasized that a revitalized creative sector could significantly drive financial growth and provide more employment opportunities.
Baba Sadiq assured attendees that the NDC is dedicated to revamping the industry to make it thrive once more, restoring its place as a key economic pillar.
Confirming the commitment, John Mahama announced that the proposed Kumasi theatre would feature a larger seating capacity than Accra’s current facility, allowing more significant events and productions.
He shared this vision with creative industry stakeholders on Tuesday at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.
The meeting addressed crucial industry needs, including the establishment of a Creative Industry Council, development of a film policy, stronger intellectual property protections, and increased funding for the arts.
John Mahama also emphasized that existing regional centers for national culture are undergoing revitalization.
The former president underscored his administration’s commitment to supporting the creative industry as a major economic driver alongside cocoa and gold, by fostering private sector partnerships and boosting strategic investments.
